Vermicomposting - Winterizing the Vermicomposter
Sunday, November 16, 2008
I came across another cardboard carton; one of the last that had enclosed the new bookcases from Ikea.
Flattened out it has four panels, with angled corners, and stands about six feet high.
I use a sharp knife to hack off a six-foot panel, and slide it between the inside of the vermicomposter and the small amount of shredded paper, soil and kitchen waste that is already there. It slides in easily.
I trim the top half of the panel and slide that three-foot length down the next side.
When all four sides are done, I use the angled-corner segments to make corners.
I now have a thin layer of cardboard and air between the vermicompost material and the outside world.
It should help retain some heat as winter deepens, and as spring comes and bacterial activity recommences, it should trap what little heat there is and accelerate the hatching of eggs.
